I am pleased to announce that GTI Fertigation is working directly with Heaviland Enterprises in Vista, CA., to build a successful company-wide fertigation program. We have installed a number of systems already and in the process of adding more properties. What does this mean for commercial landscape companies like Heaviland? Increased margins on maintenance accounts, lower water use for clients, and less urban runoff into the waterways. It’s a win-win situation for everyone and I applaud Heaviland for making the transition before the rest of our industry is forced to by pending legislation.

I have spent the majority of the past year getting the word out on the benefits of our GTI science-based fertigation programs. From reduced fertilizer and water costs to the virtual elimination of toxic granular fertilizer runoff, our approach just makes sense and it works.
While recently compiling data for a local government agency that maintains hundreds of landscaped acres near major waterways, the picture became even clearer that what we are trying to accomplish with this little company could have huge positive effects on the environment and on tightening budgets.
If just this one local agency made the commitment to change how they have been doing things for years, the amount of toxic granular fertilizer ending up in the bay and ocean from their properties alone could be reduced by over 100,000 lbs annually! In addition, they would be reducing water use and saving tens of thousands of dollars annually compared to their current practices. Now, multiply the effects this one single agency could have on the environment times the hundreds and thousands of other entities in San Diego County and you can see that the potential to drastically reduce toxic pollution is phenomenal.
My family and I are truly blessed to live in San Diego and want to help ensure it remains America’s Finest City. We spend a lot of time on the water and see firsthand how the effects of pollution are causing negative changes to our marine environment. Instead of just complaining about it, we have developed a solution that will make a difference in greatly reducing pollutants like phosphorous and nitrogen from ever making their way into our bays and ocean.
Please help us spread the word and start making a difference now.
As always, thank you for taking the time to read our thoughts.

Little did I realize that our recent marketing campaign highlighting our repellent programs would strike a cord with so many frustrated homeowners. It seems that our local cottontail rabbit population were extra busy this spring making lots of little cottontails, thus having a major effect on landscapes throughout the area.

These cute little balls of fur that kids love can do some serious damage if not kept in check. There are a variety of methods available to deal with the problem, ranging from baits to traps to fences to repellents. Depending on the severity of the infestation, the layout of the property, and the desires of the property owner, a decision is made on how to best deal with their cottontail crisis. Some people have no problem using lethal methods of control while others prefer a more humane approach.

For those in the latter group, a GTI fertigation system that can be used to both fertilize the landscape and repel noxious critters like cottontails is an option to be considered. Using your own irrigation system to effectively apply safe, non-toxic repellents provides a continuous barrier that the cottontails and other critters do not care for.
I invite anyone tired of having their beautiful flowers and grass routinely devoured by these cute little cottontails to check out fertigation as an option. I think you will be surprised by the affordability and benefits of having one of our systems in place.

The past month has been very exciting for us here at GTI Fertigation. We have seen very favorable results from our first marketing campaign and are busy scheduling property evaluations. A majority of the interest has come from the residential and estate home markets, which is fantastic. I love meeting with homeowners who “get it” when talking to them about fertigation and the benefits it has to offer.

One common concern of homeowners I have come across is the limitations of the typical “mow, blow, and go” gardener when it comes to any type of true water management or proper fertilization program. A large number of residential homeowners including those with large estates use these low cost, often non-licensed route gardeners to take control of their entire landscape needs. I am constantly amazed at the trust placed in these gardeners on landscapes that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to install. I am not saying these guys are not well-meaning or do not want to do a good job. They work very hard and are usually very trustworthy. However, when it comes to the more complex needs of a landscape, they often fall short.

I have taken the approach to try and work side by side with route gardeners when it comes to water management and fertilization programs. Most of the time, they are VERY glad to hand over these two areas of responsibility to GTI and work with us together to increase efficiency on the property.

For homeowners reading this, I recommend that you take the time to learn the limitations of your gardener and bring in the help when needed. Whether it is tree trimming, pest or disease control, water management, or fertigation, utilize the professionals in your area to help your hard-working gardener be successful on the property. This can increase the life of your landscape and reduce your annual maintenance and replacement costs in the long run.

The word sustainability is the new industry buzzword following on the heels of the whole “going green” movement. Companies across the country and around the world have jumped on the bandwagon to promote what they are doing to save the planet, primarily in an effort to attract potential new clients who share similar values.

The problem is that the practice of “sustainability” has seemingly become passive instead of active due to its overuse in marketing campaigns. I believe people have become numb to it just as they have to the concepts of having a “green business” or those that state they sell only “organic.”

Fertigation is an active, cost-effective, extremely sustainable practice that makes sense on multiple levels. From saving water to eliminating toxic granular fertilizer runoff into our bays and oceans to reducing the amount of harsh fertilizers and chemicals our children and pets are exposed to, fertigation is one sustainable practice that can remain active if used properly.

My hope and dream is that even though we are in very difficult economic times, smart decision-makers who truly believe in “active sustainability” practices will take a close look at the benefits of a properly implemented fertigation program. I am confident that it will be these people who will ultimately partner with GTI to incorporate our active solutions into their overall sustainability programs.
